Window Treatments for Different Needs

Doing more than simply dressing up a window

While window treatments add a finishing touch to a room, they are also so much more than beautiful accompaniments to a space. After all, every room has unique needs. Maybe your bedroom isn’t dark enough at night or your living room overheats from the sun’s strong afternoon rays. Or maybe your patio doors face the neighbor’s backyard, leaving you wishing for some privacy.

To get the most out of your window treatments, determine what your needs are for a space, starting with the following suggestions, and then shop for styles or features intentionally designed to meet those needs.

Light Enhancement

Light enhancing window treatments filter natural sunlight into soft radiance, making any space more captivating. They also provide UV protection, keeping furniture and flooring from fading. For window treatments that enhance light, look to one of two styles of sheer shades:

  • Sheer shades with adjustable fabric vanes between light-diffusing front and back sheer panels.
  • Sheer shades with adjustable fabric vanes attached to a light-diffusing back panel.

Energy Efficiency

Energy-efficient shades help you save energy and live more comfortably, year round. Cellular shades are the most energy-efficient shade available. Their unique honeycomb design traps air in distinct pockets, providing an added layer of insulation at the window. That helps keep a room warmer in cooler climates/winter and cooler in hotter climates/summer.

If you like the look of a roller shade but want enhanced energy efficiency, consider a cellular roller shade, which marries the simplicity of a roller shade with a layer of insulating fabric.

Room Darkening

Want a darker room for better sleep or optimal movie binging? Check out shades that combine a light-filtering and a room-darkening fabric into a single shade. With dual fabric, you can always create a darker room when you want it. Shades with dual fabric also give you the flexibility of enjoying natural light while maintaining your privacy.

Door Coverings

When the sun goes down, sliding-glass and patio doors can provide passersby and neighbors with an unfiltered view into your home. That’s where drapes, vertical sheer shades, panel-track blinds and shutters come in. Adding any of these to doors (or other large expanses of glass) improves privacy, as well as helps manage natural light during the day.

Child Safety

Window treatments with exposed or dangling cords are one of the leading home hazards for infants and young children. So when it comes to childproofing a home, cordless window treatments are an ideal alternative to those with cords.

Some window treatments, such as shutters, lack any cords, making them a great option for homes with little ones. Other choices include window treatments with cordless control, such as motorization, a wand, or shades or blinds that you simply push up and pull down with your hand.
